Recent event - Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend
On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May 2008, the beautiful Clare Valley of South Australia held its 23rd annual Gourmet Weekend.
The Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend was the first of its kind in Australia and the event continues a tradition that began in 1985 where a pioneering group of local winemakers continued their innovative approach to food and wine, with a bigger and better schedule of events encompassing and showcasing the region.
St Andrew’s Hospital was extremely fortunate to be offered the opportunity to be treated like a VIP for the day, hosted at the Foundation’s major sponsor, Taylors Wines.
Over 35 guests were collected and transported by coach from the Hospital in the early morning and taken up to the Clare Valley. After a brief stop in Auburn for coffee, cake and refreshments, the group headed off to the Winery.
As part of their VIP package, guests were treated to a range of superb Taylors wines throughout the day, a delicious gourmet lunch catered by Sosta’s Argentinean restaurant, a goodie bag filled with select Taylors items, discussions with Taylors Wines General Manager, Neil Jericho and an exclusive tour of the Winery with Chief Winemaker Adam Eggins.
The crowd were able to sit in the beautiful grounds of the Winery enjoying the sunshine with a covers band playing perfect sunny afternoon music.
The mood on the bus on the return journey back to Adelaide mirrored that of the day, as good food, good wine and the autumn sun all took their toll.
The event proved a great success for the Hospital and the Foundation would like to thank Cherry Stowman, Adam Eggins and all Taylors Wines staff for their generosity and organisation on the day.
Recent event - Foundations Ride n Stride 2008
This year saw the inclusion of a ‘walking ‘component - which allowed those that may not have wanted to ride a bike the capacity to still be involved.Over 130 cyclists "cycled" and approximately 50 walkers "walked".
Adelaide City Counsellor and, St Andrew’s Hospital Orthopaedic Surgeon, was the guest MC and official starter for the day.
A great cross section of the St Andrew’s community was represented, ranging from Hospital staff and family and friends; St Andrew's Specialists & Doctors; Board Members The Governor, Foundation Trustees, members of the Bike SA community and general public.
The Foundation was also thrilled to have Stephen Cunningham and members of the Savings & Loans Professional Cycling team participate and take time out from their busy racing schedule to support the event.
The weather caused a bit of concern with overcast skies and rain looming, but despite a few light showers, the eager crowd gathered and set off.
Strong head winds faced the riders at West Beach out along the foreshore towards Outer Harbour, and those that chose to do the 60kms ride were made to work especially hard on their way back to the Hospital.
Although the ride wasn't an official race, many participants rode with a competitive edge and below are the official results:
- 30kms ride - 1st Male: Stephen Ansell
- 30kms ride - 1st Female: Catherine Lemar
- 60kms ride - 1st Male: Hugo Pedler (aged 14 years)
- 60kms ride - 1st Female: Dr Rob & Felicity Laing (tandem team)
- Youngest rider – Sam Worley, 12 years old (30kms)
Life Personal Trainers’ led the walking group, and although most chose to walk at a moderately leisurely pace; some chose to jog the 4.5kms distance.
Once the crowd were back safely and settled on the Hospital grounds, the fun part of the event got underway. Prize giving, the raffle draw, post-ride massages all were part of the fun and relaxation. The group also enjoyed the delicious gourmet BBQ buffet luncheon and refreshments, such as award winning Taylors wines, provided.
The 2008 Ride n Stride event could not have been possible without the generous support and major sponsorship from Medibank Private.
South Australian, Area Sales Manager, Amanda Keenan and her team set up the Medibank Private kiosk and provided a range of services, including stuffing goodie bags, fielding queries, assisting the crowd as well as providing advice.
Other sponsors that contributed in making the day a success included, Life Personal Trainers, Physio Xrtra, Corsa Cycle Centre and the Foundation’s major supporter, Taylors Wines.
Savings & Loans Credit Union also generously donated water bottles, caps and along with the Medibank Private items, all participants left the event with a well-stuffed goodie bag to take home.
The Foundation would like to acknowledge and thank all the volunteers that generously gave up their time and contributed behind the scenes and on the day which greatly assisted in making the day a success.
The mission of the Foundation is to endow St Andrew’s Hospital by enabling it always to remain as South Australia's leading private hospital.
